Pension Vote Expected This Week
After months of secretive, closed door meetings Republican leaders are planning to move a pension bill through the legislature starting tomorrow—and we need to do everything in our power to stop them!
If they are successful, new employees would face historic cuts in benefits, and Pennsylvania would be left with one of the worst retirement plans in the nation.
Their plan would force new employees, and allow current employees, to choose from three new retirement options—with benefit cuts ranging from 20-50{785d64c9d7fbe93eeb1d0b5cf0d9179303a040b64432f89ec3696800e12e1b49} compared to Act 120. It would also threaten the retirement security of every current and retired employee by diverting money from PSERS to a risky new 401 (k) type plan.
Believe it or not, this draconian plan would wind up costing school districts nearly $100 million more over the next 12 years, adding increased budgetary pressure on top of Act 120 payments.
This is an irresponsible and dangerous policy. And we can only stop it by swinging 18 Republican votes in the Pennsylvania State House.
Please reach out to your members and ask them to call their Representatives today. Members can use the script below when making those calls:
Phone Script
Hello, can I speak with Representative ______________?
My name is _________________. I am a ______________________ in the ____________________ school district, and a constituent.
I’m calling to ask that you vote no on the latest pension plan.
This bill will cost school districts nearly $100 million over the next 12 years, while cutting benefits up to 50{785d64c9d7fbe93eeb1d0b5cf0d9179303a040b64432f89ec3696800e12e1b49} for new educators.
And, by diverting money from PSERS this plan puts my retirement at risk.
Don’t let a bad policy be rushed through the legislature. Please, vote no.
